The Bee

Every Laguiole en Aubrac knife carries the bee — but on a Belle Pièce, the bee is no longer an emblem carved into the spring. It is lifted free of it: shaped, filed, and engraved as its own small sculpture, then set by hand onto the piece it will never leave. Look closely and you'll find the wings carry their own fine linework, the body its own texture, each stroke placed by a single artisan working from memory and instinct rather than a template.

The Bee

This Belle Pièce carries the most sculptural bee in the Gothic family so far. The head is worked with a fine, honeycomb-like cross-hatching, the abdomen ribbed with clean, deliberate striping, and the wings folded alongside are cut as faceted, hammered panels that catch the light like leaded glass. Where an earlier Gothic piece rendered its architecture in flat, blackened linework — closer to a woodcut — this bee is textured and fully dimensional throughout, more mosaic than ink. Same family, same cathedral-inspired sensibility, but a heavier, more jewel-like hand.

That faceted language doesn't stop at the bee. It continues into the bolster caps at both ends of the handle, where a repeating pattern of cut diamond and triangle facets, divided by a woven "X" strap motif, echoes the tracery of a Gothic rose window — hammered and textured to match the bee's own wings, so the whole piece reads as one continuous vocabulary rather than a bee sitting apart from its surroundings.

A Handle Chosen for Its Grain

This knife features a handle of beige and brown Beechwood sourced from the emblematic tree of the Aubrac plateau. This knife's handle is cut from the same Aubrac beech as the rest of the collection, but chosen here for a different natural effect: spalting. Along with  the radiating ray-fleck fan seen elsewhere, this wood also carries irregular, dark streaks running through the lighter grain — a marking left behind by early-stage fungal activity in the living wood, carefully arrested before it could compromise the timber's strength. The result is a bolder, more marbled character than the sunburst figure of ray fleck: less symmetrical, more unpredictable, and entirely unrepeatable from one plank to the next.

A Line Cut by Hand, Hand-Cut Guilloché

The spine carries a flowing, flame-like guilloché — interlocking, pointed leaf shapes cut in a continuous run along the spring, bordered on both sides by a red spacer line, a color not used elsewhere in the collection. Paired with the faceted diamond work at the bolster caps, the overall effect leans more architectural and angular than the vine-and-flower or arched pieces we've documented before — a harder-edged, more graphic take on the same hand-cut tradition, freehand and unrepeatable from one artisan's work to the next.
