Laguiole en Aubrac Prestige Series Double-Plated Knife – Bee No. 17, Morta
Experience the exceptional craftsmanship of the Laguiole en Aubrac Double-Plated Folding Knife, a masterpiece handmade in France by skilled artisans. Celebrated for its refined elegance, structural strength, and meticulous hand-finishing, this luxury pocket knife represents the finest traditions of French cutlery.
The term double-plated refers to the knife’s distinctive construction, where two plates reinforce the spring. This design not only enhances durability but also provides an unmistakable aesthetic. Each pair of plates is individually hand-carved by master cutlers, transforming every knife into a unique work of functional art.
The Prestige Series
The Prestige Series is a collection of four double-plated knives, each paired with a distinctive wood: Morta, Pistachio, Thuja, or Amourette. Every model combines stainless steel and brass in its construction, yet no two are alike: each is crowned with its own uniquely designed bee, and each spine carries a completely different hand-engraved design.
On this knife, the spring is engraved with a bold herringbone of feathered chevrons, each line darkened to stand out against the bright steel, and punctuated at its center by a decorative diamond panel framed with finely dotted bands. Hand-filed stainless steel plates with scalloped edges frame the design, and two fine brass lines run along the spine from bolster to bolster, adding a thread of warm gold to the steel.
Bee No. 17 is hand-carved and forged as one piece with the spring. Its head is finely stippled, its wings are traced with delicate veins, and its body is finished in a crisp crosshatched pattern, a miniature sculpture set at the top of the bolster.
Morta: Wood Shaped by Millennia
Morta, also known as bog oak, is one of the rarest woods used in fine cutlery. It comes from ancient oak trees that fell into peat bogs and lay buried for centuries, often thousands of years. Sealed away from air, the wood slowly absorbed minerals from the surrounding earth, darkening and hardening into a material unlike any freshly cut timber. Every piece is finite and irreplaceable.
This handle shows the deep, smoky tones characteristic of morta: espresso and dark chocolate browns with hints of gray, crossed by long, straight oak grain lines and fine darker streaks. On one face, the grain runs in calm, flowing lines around the traditional shepherd’s cross; on the other, crisp parallel lines trace the length of the handle. Because no two pieces of morta share the same history, no two handles are ever alike.
Paired with brushed stainless steel bolsters, stainless steel pins, and the fine brass lines of the spine, the dark, ancient wood creates a refined contrast of earth, steel, and gold. Each scale is hand-selected, shaped, and fitted at the Laguiole en Aubrac workshop.
Whether carried as an everyday companion, displayed in a collection, or presented as a meaningful gift, this Laguiole en Aubrac folding knife embodies generations of French craftsmanship and timeless design.
